How to Be Successful with New Year’s Resolutions

Are you one to make New Year’s Resolutions?  January 1st has that “clean slate” feel to it, so why not?  Depending on how resolutions are made, people can be successful if goals are planned well and they have a good support system in place.

In 2015, these were the Top Ten New Year’s Resolutions:

TOP 10 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Stay fit and healthy 37%
Lose weight 32%
Enjoy life to the fullest 28%
Spend less, save more 25%
Spend more time with family and friends 19%
Get organized 18%
Will not make any resolutions 16%
Learn something new/new hobby 14%
Travel more 14%
Read more 12%

What Nielsen noted in this survey was some disconnect:  while 43% planned to lose weight by making healthier food choices, 76% in the year 2014 did not follow any plan or program in pursuit of that goal.

This may be one reason why so many resolutions fail – because they aren’t created to be specific, action-oriented, realistic, and most of all, they don’t include an accountability or support system.  Yes, there are apps – lots of apps! you can put on your smartphone to record your food intake, but without a live sounding board and troubleshooter, it’s like being a ship without a sail. As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, I have observed many people reporting their intake on these apps and online food records – they love to report the “good” days, but avoid the app when bingeing occurs.

Enter me.  As a Board Certified Coach, I will meet with you by phone or Skype on your schedule.  I will take an inventory of where you are and where you want to go.  I don’t tell you what to do, but I assist you as you create an action plan to accomplish your goals (or New Year’s Resolutions.  We meet regularly to tackle roadblocks and troubleshoot new challenges.  As a dietitian, I don’t give out diets – they don’t work!  I can make suggestions on tweaking your eating habits with your agreement, and I can provide excellent resources and ideas.  What I do best is hold you accountable to your goals through support and availability.  All of my coaching programs include email support between sessions.  I will be there for you when the going gets rough, and help you get back on track.

Yes!  You can accomplish your New Year’s Resolutions!  Happy New Year!
